Sacredness of the area, thanks to the Shrine of St. Michael Archangel. The Shrine, consisting of a natural Grotto and a complex of overlapping structures, built in subsequent periods, has been the destination of pilgrimages of kings, popes, saints, emperors and common pilgrims kneeling down in this cave to “wash away their sins”.

The prestigious American National Geographic Magazine listed it among the most beautiful top ten sacred caves in the world.

This is the starting place of a long faith itinerary that will lead the visitors, a few kilometres from the city, to the ancient Abbey of St. Mary of Pulsano (12th century), a mystical place surrounded by nature, where the Byzantine rite is mixed with the Catholic one.
